Columbia Law School’s Jagdish Bhagwati Fellowship supports graduate students specializing in international trade, trade law, public interest, and human rights.

The Jagdish Bhagwati Fellowship—underwritten by the Indian government—provides partial to full funding for up to three fellows per academic year.  The Law School offers a comprehensive course in these areas, co-taught by professors Jagdish Bhagwati (Economics) and Petros C. Mavroidis (Law). In addition, the Law School and other divisions of Columbia University offer specialized seminars in international trade law and related topics.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Jagdish Bhagwati Fellowship, you must first be admitted to the LL.M. Program at Columbia Law School. For more information, see the LL.M. Application Process and Frequently Asked Questions pages.

How to Apply

The application deadline for the 2024-2025 Jagdish Bhagwati Fellowship is December 1, 2023 (the same deadline as the application for the LL.M. Program).

Submit a completed application for admission to the LL.M. program through LSAC, including your résumé/CV.

The application must include a "Financial Aid Essay" (maximum 500 words) addressing the reason(s) in support of your candidacy for the Jagdish Bhagwati Fellowship; you should describe your academic and professional exposure to international trade, as well as your specific interests within this area. If you are interested in conducting research on international trade during your LL.M., discuss your research agenda in the essay.

Başvuru Koşulları

Eligibility for the Jagdish Bhagwati Fellowship:

  • Applicants must first be admitted to the LL.M. Program at Columbia Law School.

  • Candidates must hold a first degree in law (generally defined as the degree which qualifies them to practice law in their jurisdiction). A degree in a field other than law generally does not suffice for admission.

  • International lawyers who intend to reside and practice law in the United States permanently should apply for the J.D. degree, the first degree in law, rather than the LL.M.
