Description
To encourage Maori postgraduate research in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington offers scholarships to those Maori students about to begin their doctoral studies. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to New Zealand Maori students.
Selection criteria
- Applicants must be intending to enroll full-time at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must be intending to enroll for a PhD degree by thesis (e.g. AIML/COMP 690, 692, or DATA 690).
Application process
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
Applicants must meet the entry requirements for Doctoral study at the Victoria University of Wellington. Please refer to the Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research.
New Doctoral applicants should complete the Doctoral Admission and Scholarship online application and clearly indicate they wish to apply for the Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington Data Science?and Artificial Intelligence Maori PhD Scholarship.
Selection process
Decisions will be made by the (Centre for) Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Executive Committee.
Additional information
The scholarship comprises a $35,000 p.a. tax-free stipend for three years, plus tuition fees for three years (domestic fees for the thesis component only).
Successful applicants will also be supported to attend international conferences to present their accepted publications.
Regulations and conditions
- A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in a full-year program (as stipulated by Studylink full-time), within the criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- Where part-time study for the recipient is approved, their scholarship award may be pro-rated. This decision will be made by the decision-making panel. Before the recipient decides to reduce their workload from the full-time study, this must be discussed with the Scholarships Office.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may not be held in conjunction with other University awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for the Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.

- The applicants are normally expected to have achieved a minimum B+ grade average (GPA 6.0) from a prerequisite degree or qualification. Those with a slightly lower GPA will also be considered with other academic or industry experience.
