    History and purpose

     

    This scholarship is in memory of ‘Rachel’ Raye Blumenthal Freedman and is funded by the generous donation of the Raye Blumenthal Freedman Charitable Trust to encourage research and honor the memory of those who perished during the Holocaust. Raye Freedman was born in Canada and moved to London when she left school. When the war broke out in 1939 she returned to Canada and on the ship met her first husband Ernest Blumenthal. He was a Czech refugee, together they escaped and survived Hitler’s Europe. He persuaded her to move to New Zealand, they married in Auckland in 1941. Raye had a lifelong love of music and the arts as well as an enduring belief in the importance of education for young women.

    The purpose of this scholarship is for any students at the Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington wanting to further their studies at a Master's by thesis level or PhD level and to specialize in issues related to the Holocaust or its impacts in contemporary life.

     

     

    How do students apply?

     

    All scholarship applications are submitted through Community Force.

     

    A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

    Applications will normally open one month prior to the closing date. If no application link is provided below, check back again closer to the closing date. Contact us if you have any queries.

     

     

    Scholarship specific documentation

     

    • A research proposal of approximately 500 words outlining your intended area of study and how it relates to the Holocaust
    • A personal statement outlining your background and how you meet the criteria for the scholarship
    • One academic reference

     

     

    Decision makers

     

    The successful recipient will be selected by the research committee of the History program (or a delegated sub-committee), in consultation with relevant academic staff from across the University.

     

     

    Additional information

     

    The recipient of this award may be invited to present their research project to the local Jewish community at the end of their study.

    The recipient is expected to write a thank you letter to the donor within one month of receiving the award.

     

     

    Regulations and conditions

     

    1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
    2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year program (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
    3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
    4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
    5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
    6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for the Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
    7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.

    Who is Eligible?

     

    • This scholarship is open to all students working towards a Master's by thesis or Ph.D. level at the Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington in issues related to the Holocaust or its impacts on contemporary life. Unless assessed as qualified by the relevant Associate Dean, applicants must have completed a relevant research preparation or project during their Honours or Master's if they have previously undertaken study at Victoria University of Wellington.
    • As part of the intentions of this scholarship, consideration will only be given to applicants whose research will be undertaken on the basis that the Holocaust was a factual and historical event.

     

     

    Selection Criteria

     

    • Applicants must be enrolled or intending to enroll in a Master's degree by thesis or Ph.D. at Te Herenga Waka -Victoria University of Wellington.
    • Applicants' chosen area of research must be relevant to the Holocaust or its impact on contemporary life.
    • Preference will be given to full-time students however applications from part-time students will still be considered.
    • Preference may be given to female students.
